Independence Memorial Hall, Independence, Kansas

SCOPE OF WORK: Determination of National Register
ELIGIBILITY: National Register Nomination,
Kansas Historic Tax Credit Applications
CLIENT: City of Independence, Kansas
INVESTMENT: 3.5 Million
COMPLETED: August 2006

In 2006, the City of Independence completed a significant renovation of the community’s historic memorial hall, using state historic tax credits to make the project economically feasible. Work included refurbishing the auditorium, improving circulation on the first floor and modernizing basement convention/meeting facilities. The project not only extended the life of the building, which is regularly used by the public, but also brought new sparkle to an important symbol of the Independence community.

Rosin Preservation staff prepared the National Register nomination for Memorial Hall as well as the state historic tax credit applications. As part of our consultation, we worked closely with City staff, the project steering committee, the architect and Kansas SHPO staff to ensure that renovations to the building’s main lobby preserved the key historic features while meeting the community’s needs for improved traffic flow at the ticket booth and refreshment stand.

Recipient of a 2007 Kansas Preservation Project Honor Award.
