As part of efforts to revitalize Wichita’s 21st Street commercial district, the Wichita-Sedgwick County MAPD hired Rosin Preservation to survey historic resources in the revitalization area. Located near Wichita’s North End heavy industrial district, the area around 21st Street developed following the construction of the Wichita Stock Yards in 1887. The goal of the project was to identify properties that might be eligible for the National Register and thus for financial incentives for preservation. The survey information was also used to develop marketing and imaging strategies that build on the area’s existing character to create and promote its new identity as the “Nomar District.”
Rosin Preservation surveyed 187 historic resources within the project area, identifying 11 buildings and three districts that appear eligible for the National Register. The resources illustrate a variety of commercial, residential, religious, and recreational property types and architectural styles constructed in Wichita’s working-class neighborhoods over a 90-year period, beginning circa 1910. The information gathered during this survey will help the Nomar District move toward change in a positive manner – using its historic resources to create synergy between the old and the new.
