J.W. Jenkins & Sons Music Company Warehouse

SCOPE OF WORK: Documentation Report
CLIENT: Black & Veatch Special Projects Corporation
COMPLETED: June 2004

During the 1980s a tenant used the J.W. Jenkins Sons Music Company Warehouse to store and process electrical equipment containing PCBs. The PCBs, now recognized as an environmental hazard, penetrated the building’s concrete structure, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered the National Register-listed building razed due to its contamination.

As part of the mitigation agreed to by the EPA and the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office, Black & Veatch Special Projects Corporation hired Elizabeth Rosin to prepare a documentation report for the building prior to its demolition. The report contains a detailed written description of the building’s physical appearance; a discussion of its history, architects, builders, and uses; floor plans illustrating the original layout of the building; and 35mm black-and-white photographs that document the exterior appearance of the building. Rosin’s work documented a piece of our shared history for future generations and enabled the redevelopment of the site for a new use that will contribute to and enhance the surrounding community.
