Sni-A-Bar Road Bridge Replacement

SCOPE OF WORK: Document Report
CLIENT: The City of Kansas City, Missouri
(As a Consultant to TapanAm Associates, Inc.)
COMPLETED: September 2005

In 1926, the Kansas City Southern Railroad constructed the Sni-A-Bar Road Bridge to provide a safe crossing over the tracks of its new Kansas City & Grandview Railroad, a beltline that curves around the east side of Kansas City. The engineering firm Ash, Howard, Needles & Tammen (now HNTB) designed the Sni-A-Bar Road Bridge and 24 other bridges and viaducts for the new line using modern technology to create a more-efficient and safer railroad. Seventy-five years later, the Sni-A-Bar Road Bridge no longer met roadway standards, and the City of Kansas City, Missouri sought to replace the bridge. Because federal financing would be used, the Missouri SHPO evaluated the significance of the bridge and determined that it was eligible for the National Register.

To fulfill the terms of the project’s Memorandum of Agreement, the City of Kansas City hired Elizabeth Rosin to document the bridge prior to demolition. The documentation report contains a detailed written description of the bridge’s physical appearance; a discussion of its history, engineers, and builders; bridge plans, and black-and-white photographs that document its appearance. Rosin’s work documented a piece of our shared history for future generations and enabled the construction of a new bridge to provide updated safety to area residents.
